Variously known as ghillie kettles, storm kettles, kelly kettles or volcano kettles, these were traditionally used by fishermen in the west of Ireland and this version is still manufactured in the traditional way.
The advantage of this cooking system is that you don't need to carry gas canisters or solid fuel with you. It works by burning any combustible material that may be to hand around you.
First, fill the kettle up with water. The water is contained in the wall around the edge of the kettle. Then just pile in some twigs, leaves, paper, fir cones, etc into the base and light through the opening in the side. Face the opening into the wind for extra draught to help the burning process.
The heat rises through the chimney in the centre of the kettle and so heats the water around it. Additional combustible material can be dropped down the chimney if required.
When the water boils, you will hear the whistle contained in the spout. The kettle is then ready to be removed from the base and you can pour out your boiling water.
This kit also comes with a two-part grill which fits on top of the base unit containing the burning material. There is also a saucepan and frying pan that can sit on top of the grill support.
This is an ingenious device, based on knowledge passed down through the generations, and is a very effective way to boil water and cook when outside.

Most fun you'll have making a cup of tea!
I really love this kettle as it's much more fun than using a conventional gas stove (and places like festivals etc don't allow them in anyway). You just get a little fire going in the base of the unit (use some easy to light tinder or solid fuel tablets) and then put the main kettle on top. There is a hole in the side of the base to allow air in, and then the flames and heat are drawn up the inside of the kettle through the chimney - and the flames really do shoot up there a treat! The water is contained in the walls of the kettle so it has a large surface area to be heated and so it boils pretty quick. I didn't time it, but I was surprised just how quick it boiled! It also whistles like a good old-fashioned kettle when it's reached the boil. It can be a little awkward picking the kettle up and pouring from it as there is just the one handle which is directly over the hot chimney when you pull on it, and I think it could have done with another handle at the bottom to steady it when pouring. Oh, and one tip - don't put the cover on the spout on too tightly, I did that and then struggled to pull it off again while it was red hot with scalding water, so just place it gently on. These are both minor complaints though. The set comes with a little grille, saucepan and frying pan with a separate handle. So as well as boiling water for a cup of tea, I cooked myself bacon, sausage and eggs perfectly well. But the best thing from my point of view is that you can keep the fire going just by dropping more fuel down the chimney in the middle. Just use whatever is around, twigs, fir cones, leaves, etc. I actually collected some driftwood from the beach which burned really well but I have since read that it's not advisable to burn that, oh well!
Pros: Burn whatever is to hand, Everything you need, Boils water really quickly, Cook on proper open flame, Great fun!
Cons: Handle could be designed better, Don't put cover on too tight
Would recommend: Yes

Storm kettle
Excelent piece of kit once alight it boils really quick and the charcoal stays hot enough to cook a full english. Wouldn't be without it, stays in the car in its bag with cups tea coffee and powdered cow always ready for a brew anywhere. It doesn't even burn the grass. Watch your hand over the chimney
Pros: Very well made , Lots of storage space inside, Use foil to help keep clean, Everything fits in the bag, Brews quick
Cons: Don't forget the chimney.
Would recommend: Yes
