Q: What is NIJ level IIIA protection?
A: NIJ is the National Institute of Justice. They define a common industry standard for defining ballistic threat levels and testing requirements. Soft armour is required to prevent penetration from six consecutive bullets from two types of ammunition. Blunt trauma, impact to the body and effectiveness when wet are also factored into NIJ testing. The level IIIA standard requires protection against 9mm and 44 Mag bullets.
